    Judge's Comments:

The major challenge for AW Edwards was the design, manufacture and installation of the stadium roof structure in a live venue environment at the Sydney Cricket Ground. There was 1000 tonnes of steel with steel supported on three major columns spanning more than 60 metres. AW Edwards initiated the sizing of all steel to be sourced locally within Australia without overseas supply or manufacture, replaced all onsite welded connections with bolted connections, accounting for proposed services connections and maintenance access and completed all wind studies early to lock down design considerations.

Detailed planning and procedures were introduced to ensure the above and a dedicated team allocated directly reporting to the project manager.

There were large sections pre-assembled both off-site to ensure on-site assembly was correct and sections assembled on the ground on site with a crawler crane and lifted into position with tower cranes.

During assembly, additional site temporary propping was provided with the design and incorporation of a roof jacking system to ensure correct camber and final design levels.

The use of locally supplied steel and the methodology adopted for erection of the steel in the Noble, Bradman & Messenger Stands makes this a most worthy winner for the Best Use of Steel Award.
