Master Builders has been actively campaigning against a proposal that threatened the rights of independent contractors to be their own boss.

We travelled to over 20 locations around the country and held several webinars to discuss with tradies how these changes would affect them.

Thankfully, the Government and crossbenchers heard our concerns. After discussions between ourselves, Minister Burke, and crossbench Senators David Pocock and Jacqui Lambie, changes to the proposed laws were made late last week. These changes give independent contractors who earn above a certain threshold the ability to opt out of becoming an employee, ultimately preventing an increase in building costs amidst a housing crisis.

While we remain deeply concerned about the multitude of industrial relations changes and their impact on the industry, this critical amendment would not have been possible without the thousands of people who called, emailed, or visited their MPs over the last few months. Thank you.
