Civic Place has activated and revitalised the southern Liverpool CBD, turning it into a destination. Developed by Liverpool City Council in partnership with Built, and in conjunction with FJC studio, architects, Liverpool Civic Place not only revitalises Liverpool but supports future social and commercial needs of the greater community. Completed in December 2023, the 13,400sqm commercial space includes a new 21C library, unique to the City of Liverpool, combines with landscaped civic space, council facilities and administration to create a new civic place. The new curvilinear library, ‘Yellamundie’ (The Storyteller), a 5,000sqm free-standing library provides generous, high quality public domain on Scott Street which was an urban and architectural challenge. The library is a critical transition of scale between the heritage School of Arts building to the northwest and the larger scale developments to the south and east. With sustainability at the forefront of this development, Liverpool Civic Place is a 6 Star Green Star Design & As Built rating (library and commercial building) with a 6 Star Design Review achieved for the library, making it one of only ten 6 Star buildings and the only one in South Western Sydney. This bespoke development also achieves a 5 Star NABERS Energy rating and 3.5 Star NABERS Water rating for the office building. The Library façade is a high performing triple glazed curved glazed panelised curtain wall system with internal blind system which is controlled to suit sun conditions. The judges were impressed with the challenges resolved during construction due to the constrained site conditions and the high standard of finish delivered. The building satisfies a much needed vital community asset and is a worthy winner.
