The project involved the construction of a 4 storey, 5000 sqm extension to an existing data centre at Alexandria. During construction numerous challenges were overcome, including the presence of substantial asbestos in the ground, access restrictions because the site is adjacent to Gardeners Road, and cranage restrictions due to its proximity to Mascot airport; plus, the existing live data centre had to remain undisturbed. The building extension includes 4 co-location halls along with their supporting infrastructure, i.e. individual switchboards, batteries, STS and associated mechanical plant. There are 5 x 65 tonne (power failure backup) generators located on the roof. The whole building is finished to a very high standard and the fact that this is Erilyan’s eighth project for Equinix is a testament to their professionalism and cooperative contracting culture.
