The Michael Kirby Law School project involved the redevelopment of an existing building within the live campus including all services, amenities and infrastructure. The project required the demolition of levels 2 and 3 and partial demolition of the ground floor and Level 1 concrete slab while retaining the existing first floor slab and columns structural elements. The redeveloped 4 storey building consists of a massed timber structure on top of and around the retained first floor concrete structure. The large open central atrium contains a scenic lift, an architectural helical staircase and cantilevered CLT meeting rooms. The project sets a benchmark for the future of mass timber projects and tertiary educational spaces. The finished product is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship and strategic vision seamlessly integrating innovative timber technologies into the adaptive reuse of an existing structure. The result is a vibrant hub for learning that not only inspires but also promotes wellbeing and collaboration.
