CTRL’s new office space is Australia’s first Quantum Technology facility. Spanning 1,000sqm, the ground floor features specialist lighting and custom fabricated mirrors creating the illusion of “Tardis like” floating lab spaces. Level 1 showcases the existing curved heritage trusses providing a workspace for 75 staff. The installation of high-spec photovoltaic solar on the roof together with battery backup systems support the use of green energy. Q-CTRL leased the unique heritage commercial listed building in the heart of Chippendale and the high quality intricate fit-out completed by FDC creates a premium quantum technology facility. The scope included: three lab spaces on the ground floor, end of trip facility, new bathrooms and compliant DDA toilet, open office spaces, meeting rooms with VC capabilities, quiet rooms, staff kitchen, plus a new DDA compliant lift. The fit-out required new solar panels & plant on the roof with FDC extending the plant platforms as required. The existing buildings heritage status caused an increase in works and cost to the client after FDC had commenced on site due to the requirements of the DA. FDC’s original scope was to protect specified heritage internal components of the building but the heritage consultant advised that to achieve a compliant OC the external face of the building required to be repaired with the removal and replacement of existing broken or damaged brickwork, window frames and lintels, plus box guttering. The design was by Architectus and their vision required a collaborative effort during the ECI phase, calling upon FDC’s design team and construction expertise to refine the design and provide guidance on buildability, cost, and scheduling. This fit-out is unusual as it contains office space and associated facilities, as well as dry labs for the development of high technology IT based around Quantum computing. The fit-out reflects this duality as the office areas on the first floor are crisp and well detailed with high quality bespoke joinery elements, whilst the ground floor dry labs are heavily serviced with electrical, comms, and A/C services with finishes that are workaday reflecting the research work that takes place. The entry to each lab is beautifully designed and constructed as a floating bespoke joinery cupboard - it is a surprise when one enters what appears to be a joinery cupboard to experience a “Tardis moment” as the spacious lab opens out in front.
