The client’s brief for this project was simply to renovate the pool at their Sydney harbourside home and to “make their old pool look good”. The renovation scope was the removal of the old fibreglass pool interior, the pool handrails and existing terracotta tiles and replace the pool interior with glass mosaic tiles, new coping and new glass fencing. When KMD commenced removal of the fibreglass interior, large cracks were discovered in the pool shell and upon further investigation, the pool shell was an old gunite shell and the steel was rusted. Therefore, the pool was condemned, requiring immediate removal and replacement. Site access was very difficult and no machinery could be brought on site. As a new pool shell and suspended walkway had to be constructed, 10 piers were hand drilled three metres through rock to stabilise the new pool’s foundations. The project went from a simple renovation to a complicated pool construction requiring considerable skill and workmanship from the KMD team. The pool is finished with glass mosaic tiles and sandstone paving, while frameless glass panels give uninterrupted views from within the house, across the pool and onto the harbour. Not only does this new pool look stunning, but it’s definitely built to last.
