The building design was based on the requirements for the Transmission Electron Microscope suites, ensuring the functionality of the highly sensitive cry-o-electron microscopes they house. Structural re-design was required to accommodate the Incorporation Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer in lieu of traditional steel reinforcement.   To minimize electromagnetic field disruption, the structure was designed with glass reinforced plastic reo and stainless steel for the bracing elements.
