This winning traditional pool is made entirely from natural stone – basalt (charcoal) throughout the pool surrounds and Sukabumi Indonesian green stone that the owners sourced and imported from Bali for the interior. An impressive feature of the pool is the fact that it has been designed around “working tiles”, with copious amounts of time being spent – pre-excavation stage – calculating the overall finish size of the pool, based on the 600x400mm tile size to ensure that this feature could be achieved with no tile cuts required. Even the stair and seat area works with the 600x400mm basalt tiles. Great accuracy was required at all stages of construction. When designing the stair and seat area, it was apparent that perhaps the use of the basalt tile only was going to create a potential safety hazard for users not being able to navigate where the steps started and ended. Thus a Sukabumi (green) tile inlay was rebated and installed into the basalt tread tiles, outlining the stair treads and shape. What started as a safety consideration became a safety feature and doesn’t go unnoticed. A customised waterfall was also designed using the basalt tiles, with a custom-made stainless-steel reservoir housed behind the wall to feed the stone overhang with a very natural flow of water. The Sukabumi tiles, once laid and grouted, were ground and honed smooth for a great underfoot feel. The owners wanted a cleaning system that was low maintenance and didn’t require large amounts of chemicals to maintain, thus they opted for a UV-light sanitising system with an automatic chlorinator. All of the pool’s mechanics have been cleverly incorporated into a daybed seating area that houses the Jacuzzi and overlooks the koi pond. Overall, this classic and timeless pool brings together attention to detail, bespoke design and the individuality of the owners and their home. A simply stunning project from All Northern Constructions.
