Freshwater Studio is a compact 29m² plan that uses the fundamental design principles of durability, natural light and ventilation. The compact yet versatile space accommodates a home office, kitchen and living quarters. The fully functioning bathroom and laundry is shared with indoor/outdoor workplace and the garden entertainment area.
The primary structural-steel frame and decorative ply bracing is a unique feature along with a beeswax-finished, steel trowel concrete floor. The skillion roof with laser light inlays to its polycarbonate skylights allows diffused natural light. The roof floating in a clerestory of openable highlight windows allows for cross ventilation and gives a sense of lightness while preserving privacy.
The external wall cladding is zincalume corrugated iron that wraps around the three sides of the structure, protecting it from the elements. The external front facade cladding is blackbutt hardwood timber panelling. The internal walls are Murobond-painted plywood lining to the studio and shed and the bathroom walls are of a CFC finish.
The zincalume is incorporated internally as a splashback for the kitchen and the concrete benchtop has a round stainless-steel sink cast in by the builder.
