Possum Creek Hemp Residence realised the dream of the clients to have a truly symbiotic relationship with the environment. With this at the core of the project they focused primarily on two things - the way in which the structure sits in the landscape, and the environmental impact of both the building and living in it. They paid particular attention to the use of non-toxic materials, and materials that have less impact in both production and ongoing emissions. Another vital aspect of the project was its utilisation of thermal mass and sufficient insulation for maximum energy efficiency.

Fulfilling all of the above points, Hempcrete was used as the primary building material. Some of the features of Hempcrete include: being toxin free as it is made from hemp fibre, sand, lime and water; carbon negative in both agricultural production and storing carbon; insulation properties achieved through thermal mass and the enclosed air pockets and breathability, allowing moisture to be stored and released in the walls, thus inhibiting the growth of mould spores in the home environment.

Other key energy efficiency and sustainable elements are: Hebel floor to achieve thermal mass and insulation in the subfloor; Inex magnesium oxide board in place of fibrecement; pigmented natural clay and lime renders (no paint except for the ceilings, VOC-free eco paint used); all oils on the timber structure are natural oils; 90,000-litre rainwater tank; 6kW solar system with 14kW usable salt battery storage; LED lighting; ceiling sweep fans for cooling; Sandon heat pump for all hot water; use of a composting toilet on site during construction; an elaborate septic system installed with two reed beds and three absorption trenches; passive cool tubes for the refrigerator heat and for the larder; window positioning for cross ventilation; and extended shade overhangs for summer heat control while allowing winter warmth.

This design and construction has resulted in a home with comfortable living, a healthy indoor environment, reduced operating costs and an investment in lasting architecture.
