(AIIM P&D) is the 6th building for the University of Wollongong Innovation Campus and is an Australian first in offering innovative processing facilities for research.
The Project consists of office accommodation, research laboratories, clean rooms, workspaces, electron microscope rooms, amenities and building services. To manage the electromagnetic field created within the laboratories the building elements were designed, by the Baulderstone led team, using laminated timber columns and beams for the structure, framing and the cladding.
The key features of the timber, driven by the proposed highly magnetic microscopes, made it the most suitable material for use in the building, even though timber has not recently been used extensively in these types of buildings.
The building design required complex angles be achieved. This was managed through workshopping the design during the development of the process to achieve the desired result for the manufacture of the timber trusses.
