Built adjoining the existing heritage-listed synagogue, this new, modern, 700-seat sanctuary and covered forecourt complements the older building. Lower levels include a childcare centre and open play space. The development gave consideration to the heritage requirements and created a state-of-the-art childcare and sanctuary space that allows for current demand and expected growth. The activities of the existing synagogue and childcare centre were maintained throughout the project with the successful implementation of a site-specific community liaison plan. Authorities were managed with DA-staged approvals, tree removals, road access for services, and compliance with strict acoustic requirements. Site access was restricted to a rear entry from a narrow dead-end street. A heritage-listed Moreton Bay Fig on the site further complicated deliveries and unloading. Co-operation of the neighbours was critical and this was managed by extensive consultation and notification. The neighbours were receptive and positive for the duration of the project. Architectural detailing required the steel framing, internal linings, floor tiles and the like to be carefully set out with minimum tolerances. 3D laser scanning was used to ensure accurate set out and to digitally record the results. Glazed artworks to the north wall and western screen were a feature of the design and required comprehensive involvement by the builder. The Emanuel Synagogue redevelopment has provided a wonderful space for the congregation’s celebrations and festivals.
