The Sisters of Charity Heritage & Archive Centre was formally St Vincent’s Convent, a 12-bedroom convent for the Sisters of Charity. Demand for the convent accommodation declined and the building was modified and extended to accommodate the Sisters of Charity Heritage & Archive Centre. The project included the complete strip-out and partial demolition of the existing two- storey building, and the construction of a new three-storey concrete structure to the rear of the existing remaining building.  The works also included the detailed fit-out of all floors encompassing meeting rooms, repository storage areas, a large-scale state-of-the-art exhibition museum including intricate joinery and glass showcases, central theatre, interactive media display and external courtyard and landscaping works. The tower to the north-east corner was remodeled to provide a new identity and a new terracotta façade installed. The methodology had to account for the difficult inner-city location, along with the issues resulting from partial demolition, while retaining the existing fabric. The works included significant structural underpinning and temporary bracing.  Materials handling was difficult due to the narrow cul-de-sac street, restricting all vehicles visiting the site to 8m. This meant that demolition, excavation and concrete structural work required detailed planning. The project had a degree of difficulty far in excess of what its contract sum would indicate. The works were professionally executed and resulted in a high-quality project.
