The Elements of Byron is a new five-star resort located on Belongil Beach, Byron Bay. The resort includes restaurants, bars, extensive function facilities, pools and landscaping. The lobby and reception areas are a central theme for the development. The 4600sqm roof was to imitate a windswept dune and the builder initiated a new design to achieve a better outcome. The roof comprises post-tensioned steel trusses spanning up to 38m. Fibre-reinforced CHS purlins were used to give the roof its flowing appearance. These have no Australian Standard and the University of Sydney was engaged to carry out testing of the system. Roofing was aluminum over a ply sub-strata, with each sheet custom made for its location, prior to its delivery to site. The cladding, due to the undulating falls, was designed to be 100 per cent watertight. The roof is of the high standard the builder set for the project. All other aspects of the trades and services throughout this building are a reflection of the care and preparation given to the roof. Detail finishes are all excellent.
