This project involved constructing a single-story residence to replace our clients' home that was lost in the 2019-2020 bushfires. The dwelling's design was influenced by the surrounding native bushland and aimed to accentuate the natural landscape while capturing the precinct's views.
Informed by both thermal modeling and view considerations, the dwelling's orientation runs north-east to southwest. This allows for capturing and manipulating northern sunlight, as well as effective cross ventilation and framing of distinct views.
The external facades and fenestration scheme have been deliberately designed to provide excellent interior environmental conditions while ensuring maximum protection of the dwelling in the event of a bushfire. The external walls allow for high levels of insulation, thermal mass, and bushfire resistance. All windows are BAL 40 rated, with shutters/screens where required, and the roof structure, external cladding, and features are designed to reduce the possibility of ember lodgement.
The pavilion-style alternating skillion roofs and positioning and scale of glazing elements reduced the overall presence and bulk of the dwelling. The occupants are provided with a highly efficient and thermally comfortable environment through multiple methods of passive heating and cooling, solar power generation technologies, and rainwater harvesting.
The outdoor terrace allows for seating and recreation, with screening not required due to the dwelling's isolated location. Landscaping helps protect the dwelling and outdoor spaces from unfavourable conditions, controlling prevailing winds and solar radiation. The existing bushland provides a natural noise buffer, and the pathways to the property are clear, aesthetically pleasing, and safe.
This low impact, environmentally and ecologically considerate development integrates architectural expression with sustainable building practices and bushfire protection and prevention systems, exceeding regulatory requirements.
