Yellow Rock Passivhaus is a 2 storey, semi off-grid, multigenerational family Passive House. Informed by both thermal modelling and view considerations, the dwelling's orientation has been chosen to allow the Passivhaus modelling to reach its fullest potential, whilst also framing the majestic bush views.
The external facades and fenestration scheme have been deliberately designed to provide excellent interior environmental conditions while ensuring maximum protection of the dwelling in the event of a bushfire. The external walls allow for high levels of insulation, thermal mass, and bushfire resistance. All windows are BAL 40 rated, and the roof structure, external cladding, and features are designed to reduce the possibility of ember lodgement, as the original structure on this block of land was lost during the tragic 2013 bushfires.
A key component of the design is adhering to liveability standards. Ensuring that height of the windows, door handles and ease of access to all parts of the house can be achieved without a second thought. Both owners have elderly parents that require extra accommodations and generally, the goal is to grow, change and age all with in the compound.
Sustainability, carbon footprint reduction and waste minimisation are all key values held by the owners. They chose to celebrate many elements of the history of this parcel of land and the eco system it is within. They paid homage to the structure lost in the 2013 bushfires by constructing the garages and carport areas in the existing footprint. Whilst also ensuring to recycle, repurpose and reuse as much of the soil, rock and building materials on the site as possible, whether that be through rock features, mulch, soil relocation.
Other environmental features include rain water collection and storage in a 120,000 litre tank, a 15kW Photovoltaic power system with 28kW of battery storage, and a heat recovery ventilation system to keep the internal temperatures comfortable while maintaining fresh clean air within the home.
