One Shelly Street is Australia’s first diagrid building consisting of over 2000 tonnes of steel. Brookfield Multiplex Constructions were commissioned as part of a design and construction contract to deliver a project developed, owned and operated by Brookfield Multiplex for tenant Macquarie Group. This project has already received awards from Australian Engineering and Architectural fraternities for the unique design.’ The MBA judges were shown a film presentation of the steel erection process by members of the Brookfield Multiplex Site Management team.
Steel was chosen over concrete for this building due to its lightweight properties that would not overload the existing basement structure of a previous building that was under construction but halted at ground level. There is no doubt that the structural steel diagrid presented a huge challenge to the design team, subcontractors suppliers and of course the Brookfield Multiplex Site team as none had ever been involved in a project of this kind before.
The installation of steel work to the diagrid and floors was a critical path item, construction methodology and planning was developed by the site team in collaboration with suppliers and installers. The builder acknowledged Lysaght D&C as a vital contractor in the successful delivery of the project who helped to ensure the planning was detailed and realistic, so as to allow the follow on trades to plan their activities. The planning process also ensured that the highest safety standards were maintained.
The builder maintained that their usual practice of tool box talks enabled input from supervisors and workers alike to generate the most informed response to the ever evolving conditions that existed on the site.
The whole of the team involved in the design, fabrication, erection and safe delivery of this unique project using steel are a credit to the Australian Construction Industry.
