The Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney provides a world class research and education facility. There are ten levels, 46,700 square metres of space accommodating 950 researchers and 1,455 undergraduates.
During the tender process, the builder offered an alternate design and significant cost savings, with the desired functionality. University services infrastructure, crane approvals and early procurement of materials were addressed and resolved early. Panellised glazed curtain walls and sandstone façade cladding were combined with composite metal cladding and ground floor shop fronts. The peak construction workforce was 600 workers.
The unique atrium with its curved balustrades makes for a stunning entry finished to a high standard. Handover was achieved 2.5 months earlier than the contract required and was a commendable achievement.
