Buildcorp Contracting NSW was awarded the contract to rebuild the historic St Barnabas Anglican Church after the original church burnt down, resulting in a total demolition and the construction of a new church.
The works entailed some complex engineering and building solutions to meet the design criteria. A tower crane was used due to the site constraints and the requirement of lifting above existing premises surrounding the site. The works entailed a reinforced concrete frame with bored piers to the basement car park, with the level one frame and the canopies to the Mountain Street elevation all structural steel with a compressed fibre façade.
The heritage component of the project - being the remnant fabric of the original church -was incorporated into a white concrete and brick wall constructed from the original church bricks. The project incorporated innovative ceiling panels in the worship space over the altar which are made up of perforated aluminium sheets fixed to a timber and aluminium frame wrapped in white fabric.
This statement was made in the builder’s submission and the judges concur:
This project is an innovative design, which the builder has brought to life. Shackled with constraints from limited access, room to build, store materials and a demanding design, Buildcorp has succeeded in delivering a building that is as quoted by a member of the church congregation “it draws you up physically… towards what you are trying to reach spiritually”. We believe this is a wonderful public building that will continue to delight the end user and is fine example of excellence in construction.
