Bricks are laid in various patterns called brick bond. Bricks must be laid straight and level, with the most common pattern being stretcher bond because most homes are brick veneer which only requires one ‘skin’ of brickwork. The brickwork in this project is laid in a herringbone pattern which is not seen in today’s construction. The bricks are laid in alternating rows at 45 degrees to each other. The herringbone bond is mostly used in paving but where used in a wall there is a lot of cutting. It was popular in the Tudor era and was normally bounded by timber so it became a feature but was not a structural element. The craftsmanship displayed in using bricks for both walls and paving in the one area was a test of the builder and they have passed with flying colours. Congratulations.
