Detailed planning and preparation was required to construct the Renal Ambulatory Care unit within the existing very busy St Vincent’s Hospital. Access-ways and hoarding were critical items in the successful execution of the proposed works.
There were four stages to the works with decanting and relocation of employees and equipment required. Men and materials access to the floor was by an external hoist and stairway.
The works included five bathrooms, two kitchenettes, three art prep sink areas, laundry and two bottle prep areas, all of which required 35 core holes drilled through the existing slab. The work was carried out with a fully occupied office space, 24 hour operating cafeteria and St Vincent’s Outpatient area, all below where the works were carried out. A further difficulty was the areas below had set plasterboard ceilings. All these works required good communications with the user/occupiers.
The works were well executed and the finishes were of a high standard within a difficult working environment.
