The Sydney Seaplanes Base Station is Australia’s first purpose built Seaplane Terminal. The base is aeronautically themed with wing designed roof areas and interiors that reflect the history of the golden age of flying boats and their significance in Rose Bay and Australia. There were numerous stakeholders in this development. Consultants were interstate and overseas, authorities included Council, Roads and Maritime and Heritage. Neighbors, sound issues, events in the adjacent park, egress for the public and the ongoing seaplane operations were carefully coordinated. The building shape and location over water, with the construction of the sea wall by a separate contractor being undertaken at the same time, required detail set out and planning. An alternate pre-fabricated “v” beam system was instigated to save costs and time. The custom rolled barge flashings, to resemble an aeroplane wing were sourced and l by the construction team. Materials handling, access and the limitations of the building were managed well and the finished building has of an excellent standard of finish.
