Located on the UWS campus, this building is of national cultural and heritage significance. Built in 1813, it is considered the earliest three storey public brick building erected in Australia. The works accommodate the Whitlam Institute and the Prime Ministers Library with community spaces and a new lift included. The internal building fabric has been sensitively dismantled and restored, with materials reused in their original location where possible. The building was derelict and asbestos and lead contaminates were removed. Construction had to take place whilst the university grounds were fully operational University grounds was managed. Archaeologists, the Whitlam Institute, Heritage Society, UWS and various consultants were part of the project and delays and recording of the archaeological findings were addressed as they arose.
A well restored building.
