The project’s design brief called for the construction of a Hamptons-style timber barn nestled in the crest of rolling hills overlooking both the bushland and blue ocean in the distance. However, this lovely image was complicated by the imposing of bushfire-zone restrictions.
This granny flat is actually part of a barn and is a stylish and practical solution to a specific design challenge. From a distance the barn appears to be lined with timber boarding but on closer inspection the product is a magnesium oxide-based board which achieves a one-hour fire rating and adhered to current BAL regulations. Additional vertical decking strips added to the aesthetic appeal by emulating the appearance of the shiplap panelling effect to cover the exposed joints that also increased the fire compliance ratings. With a charcoal staining of the sheets and boards using a chemical-free product it emulated the grain of timber and the tone is shifted in accordance with the light and weather conditions. Externally, the rustic character is emphasised with the inclusion of external paths along the classic fire pit built with the aid of recycled bricks.
The interior offers a delightful study in contrasts; coming complete with an internal concrete floor that reflects an industrial effect, as softened and complemented by the presence of decorative furnishings but still manages to be utilised for its intended purpose of storing farm equipment. Rainwater is collected and stored for irrigation purposes and a Bio-Cycle system treats the sewage. The concrete slab floor is insulated with polystyrene.
The barn is situated within the view from the main dwelling on the property and has been designed to be aesthetically pleasing, with colour and material choice enabling it to blend seamlessly into the natural surrounding environment. It was also oriented at an offset angle to the main dwelling to reveal its isometric viewpoint, thus providing for optimum view from the main house.
