The Bingo Recycling Centre Auburn is the most advanced and innovative recycling centre in the southern hemisphere. The unique facility faced storm damage in 2013 which not only jeopardised that industry-leading facility’s ability to process waste at an exceptional rate, but unfortunately resulted in the warehouse’s closure for more than two years. The site’s location adjacent to Duck River, Auburn required special environmental considerations, as the wetlands are of regional conservation significance, providing home to endangered ecological communities. Furthermore, geological conditions required specialised engineering solutions. The damaged building was removed prior to Dewscape taking over the construction of a new 6000m2 warehouse on the site.   The existing site offered a concrete hardstand which provided for effective movement of heavy vehicles. However as the site is adjacent to the Duck River, the water table served as a challenge during excavation and in-ground structures.  Steel screw piling systems were introduced, which eliminated the effect of the high water table. Existing expansive machinery could not be relocated, requiring the new building to be constructed around and over the existing machinery. Environmental impact controls were put in place to limit/eliminate dust and surface run off and the contamination of the natural surrounding environment. This project was faced with difficult site constraints, with the high water table from being adjacent to the Duck River and wetlands of regional conservation significance providing a home to endangered ecological communities requiring special environmental considerations. The project has shown how careful planning can produce a large commercial facility with proper consideration for the environment. It is a worthy winner of the Excellence in Environmental Management, Construction Awards for 2016 in the price bracket of $10 Million to $50 Million.
