World class views of Sydney Harbour is fully utilised and highlighted due to the width of the unitised façade panels, with monolithic sheets of glass fabricated to 3.6m x 3.6m for each insulated façade panel.
The size of these panels created a number of challenges during detailed design, fabrication, shipping, transport to site and installation.
The selection of the glass was carefully sampled, to ensure the clarity was extremely high, so as to not hinder the view, however due to the increased spacing of the mullions and sunshades, the glass needed superior thermal performance also. Argon filled insulated glass units with a neutral coloured coating on the glass was required to maximise the thermal performance whilst still maintaining the architectural intent, and not clash with the colour of the terracotta sunshades.
The design of the mullions was carefully considered to include insulation inside the extrusions supporting the glass, which allowed the façade to provide the thermal comfort to users inside the building whilst not affecting the clarity of the view.
The project was delivered to a high standard on a difficult site. The end result provided unobstructed views of Sydney Harbour. FDC achieved a high standard with the clever and innovative use of the glass.
