This project was the delivery of a new CSSD and Orthopaedic Specialist Surgical Centre (OSSC) for Macquarie University Hospital. The CSSD was a building extension and upgrade to the existing Central Sterilisation Services Department (CSSD) and was undertaken whilst the existing CSSD department remained operational at the existing processing capacity. The CSSD was expanded and upgraded to comply with the Australasian Health Facility Guidelines (AHFG) and to service the growing demand from the Hospital, including 4x new Orthopaedics operating theatres on L5. The construction of the new Orthopaedic Specialist Surgery Centre on L5, included 4x new state of the art digitally integrated orthopaedic operating theatres complete with toughened glass walls, sterile rooms, 8x bed recovery unit together with 8x second stage recovery chairs, 29x bed in-patient ward, 2x staff stations, administration support areas and the construction of 2x new materials hoists for dirty and sterile equipment transfer between the L5 theatres and the hospital’s L2 Central Sterile Services Department. FDC’s contract was a D&C and they were able to bring a series on innovations to the project which simplified construction and contained construction costs such as: re-specified the original Linen Hoist to a Passenger Lift to increase operational efficiency, re-designed the structural steel to concrete lift shaft to accommodate the passenger lift, the use of a lightweight CFC Flooring, modular construction and the cladding of the sterile & dirty utility hoist shafts prior to the shafts being crane lifted into position. The project was completed while the Hospital remained fully operational and is finished to a very high-level reflecting FDC’s commitment to the construction, and the client’s selection of prestige materials and finishes. In the new orthopaedic operating theatres toughened glass is used for wall linings together with a high-tech integrated “Air Bridge” laminar flow HEPA filter and combined theatre lighting gantry - both imported from Germany. The new ward is likewise finished beautifully, and the quality of the finished project is a credit to FDC and the entire design and delivery team.
