The three existing Qantas buildings had their facades removed and then the structures were connected beneath a steel and glass roof creating an “internal hub street”. Glazed cantilevered pod balconies protrude from the sides of the existing buildings above the street with staircases and pedestrian bridge link connecting all levels.
Two types of ceramic frit were used on the project for separate purposes. The frit, either ceramic or enamel paint, were applied to the inside face or interlayer of the laminated glass. The detailed planning and supervision ensured the dots align with each other at the joins between panels both vertically and horizontally. Not all panels were identical in size.
A second type of frit was a 3mm dot pattern to the skylight glass which enhanced the shading co-efficient of the glass and reduced the solar heat within the atrium. This glass with its frit appears clear whilst maintaining the target temperature in the atrium.
There was much other glass used in the various facades, bridge and stairs which create a great space and visual impact from the outside and upon entry.
FDC has achieved a high standard of finish with detailed planning and co-ordination. The problems presented by the design and engineering has been overcome and delivered within a tight program.
