The Crows Nest Substation project comprises the construction of two additional 132/11kV transformer bays and GIS room, with the objective being to upgrade the electricity supply to the Crows Nest/North Sydney area.
Despite its location on the busy Albany Street, in the vicinity of a main shopping centre, car park and surrounding neighbours, Fugen carried out the successful construction of the new transformer bays and GIS room whilst the existing substation remained operational. Furthermore, although the project suffered many setbacks from asbestos removal, dewatering and a formidable ground floor slab design, the project was delivered on time and within budget.
The works were undertaken on the site of the three storey office block and required extensive excavation, installation of piles in a very confined area as well as shotcrete stabilisation. The structure consisted of reinforced concrete, to construct the cable pits, flame traps, oil containment tank and transformer bay floors. Above ground works consisted of reinforced concrete, with six metre high precast concrete panelled wall construction to the substation building areas. The installation of the precast panels required special attention due to existing power lines.
