The project involved the construction of a new Broadcast & Communication Facility under the existing transmission tower at TXA Richmond Avenue, Willoughby. It’s a special purpose building with a “mission critical” operation for broadcasting free-to-air transmission for channels 7, 9 and 10.
The building was located under the legs of the existing and operating transmission tower which was broadcasting from an existing RF hut during the construction.
Construction works included ground remediation of entire site, the main transmission building, a standby generator, a disaster recovery shed, a water treatment shed, an underground detention tank, a new electrical kiosk, an external carport, driveways, retaining walls and landscaping.
Planning and staging of the works was critical so as not to disturb the functionality of the tower.
A very major OH&S risk throughout the project was the constant monitoring of the weather because if there were any lighting strikes within 25km of the site, the entire site had to be evacuated for the rest of the day. A dedicated monitor for Storm Tracker was set up on site to monitor the weather. In addition, the site sheds and temporary perimeter fence had to be earthed for safety reasons if there was a sudden and unscheduled lighting strike.
This facility was critical to the operation of all major commercial television networks. Through the professionalism and expertise of Fugen and the safe construction methodologies implemented by the Fugen management and site team, the new facility was completed in the contract period with no disruption, to a high standard of workmanship.
