This $61 million design and construct contract involved the design and construction of a new bridge, duplicating the existing Sheahan Bridge over the Murrumbidgee River and the adjacent flood plain on the Hume Highway at Gundagai.
The bridge is 1146 metres long consisting of 3 spans of traditional balanced cantilever box girders over the Murrumbidgee River and 24 spans over the floodplain. The piers and superstructure of the new bridge had to aesthetically match the appearances of the existing bridge. Fulton Hogan successively completed the contract 4 months ahead of the contract completion date by proposing and implementing an alternative design for the 24 spans over the floodplain of precast bulb T beams.
The 96 T beams were precast on site on a one beam per day cycle in a special purpose precast facility. The balanced cantilevers were constructed by recycling the form travellers previously used on the Lawrence Hargrave Drive Bridge.
The project was completed to a very high standard, within the contract time with an excellent safety record.
