The 2 corner house is a solidly built refuge high on an exposed sloping shaley site overlooking Warriewood Beach.
The house opens to courtyards on both the north east and the south west corners. The former providing for outlook and cooling breezes. The latter being the quiet sheltered side, when the north east sea breezes make life on the ocean side of the house uncomfortable.
In material terms, the house is largely constructed using concrete and timber. The floors on all three levels are polished concrete structural slabs to provide thermal mass, but also with integrated hydronic heating. Cladding, ceilings, doors, windows and joinery are timber. Externally, timber is paint finished for ease of maintenance. Internally, where the timber can be protected more successfully against the harsh environment, there is extensive use of oiled blackbutt and rosewood. The marriage of hard concrete and the appearance of timber is particularly effective in establishing a feeling of warmth and security that was core to the design brief.
Amidst an array of site related challenges, the client expressed a strong desire for a building that had excellent thermal and acoustic performance. The open jointed timber ceilings are an acoustic treatment throughout the house to almost entirely dampen echoing that can be associated with hard internal surfaces.
The reverse veneer walls with concrete internal and timber cladding, high levels of insulation to the walls ceilings roof and floors, north orientation and double glazed (low E argon filled) timber framed windows and doors, ceiling sweep fans in the bedrooms, all contribute to a remarkably stable thermal environment which does not require any active cooling.
The house is fitted with a 4.5kW solar power system, 10,000 litre rainwater tanks, electric induction cooktop and LED lighting throughout,
This design has resulted in a home with comfortable living, reduced operating costs and an investment in lasting architecture. It is a worthy Winner of the Excellence in Energy Efficiency Awards for 2015
