The Community Centre has been constructed in the Heritage sensitive former Prince Henry Hospital site at Little Bay.  Many more controls than normal, were placed on this site, which has resulted in a building that is very sympathetic to its locality, both visually and with its environmental footprint.  With exposure to the harsh coastal conditions, materials were chosen for their durability and visual appeal. The building comprises of three primary parts. The first part is a low slung concrete structure with roof planting, encompassing staff and support areas and internal circulation space. The other two primary parts of the building are the auditorium and multi-purpose rooms which sit as two higher volumes above the plane of the landscaped roof.  Given the location, with its expansive views of the ocean, coastline and golf course, glass plays a key role in providing views, while being shaded from the summer sun for thermal comfort. A large amount of the glazing can be opened for egress and natural ventilation.
ESD features include natural ventilation through high level louvre windows (that are controlled with wind, rain, and temperature sensors), low energy light fittings and lighting control systems, rainwater collection and reuse for toilets and landscaping, 12 photovoltaic panels for electricity generation, 3 solar water heater panels connected to gas boosted hot water system,  and low reliance on air-conditioners.
The facility has both indoor and outdoor spaces for cultural activities and events, with interpretive elements incorporated into the construction including the floral imagery of Eastern Suburbs Banksia Shrub species, aboriginal words with local significance as translated and agreed with the local Aboriginal Land Council, and the landscaped surrounds are planted with suitable native species, which are able to be used in conjunction with the building as a basis for Council’s sustainability education programs.
