This unusual design-and-construct project was to construct an underground replica of an 1870s gold mine for tourists. The structure comprised a fully waterproofed concrete structure buried beneath a mullock heap with two exhibition spaces linked by a tunnel. The internal finishes were designed to represent the original 1870 tunnel propping methods with baulk timbers and corrugated iron lagging. The external façade was finished with rough-sawn hardwood cladding planks fixed over the modern structure but were made to appear rudimentary in their installation. The finished project is a clever combination of modern structural materials and processes to provide a safe and compliant building mixed in with a theatrical façade, providing an appearance that replicates the effect of an old 19th century gold mine.
