The Quantum Computation and Communication Technology Centre is a highly technical laboratory fit out. It has highly specialised equipment that requires tightly controlled conditions to operate effectively. The equipment is sensitive to temperature fluctuations, electromagnetic interference and vibration. There were stringent design specifications. Works were within an existing building, this was stripped out of all services and there was extensive demolition and major excavation in restricted space. New slabs were poured and each laboratory was strictly isolated from vibration. Non-metal reinforcing was used to reduce electromagnetic interference, all walls and ceilings were insulated against sound and moisture, plant and equipment was replaced and all cabling were shielded against electromagnetic interference. The completed dust-free area was fitted out with the specialist equipment. Works were completed within the university grounds and traffic controls and safety concerns were addressed to suit the university guidelines and restrictions.
