This project comprised the delivery of the design and construction of the new maintenance facility at Auburn for DEDI Rail, as a part of the Reliance Rail Rolling Stock PPP. The PPP contract entails the design, manufacture and maintenance of 480 passenger train sets for a period of 30 years. The project itself required a collaborative approach involving the train set manufacturer and maintainer (DEDI Rail), the principal (RailCorp), financial providers and the PPP vehicle (Reliance Rail). Beyond that, the project team undertook proactive liaison activities with neighbouring properties and regulatory authorities, including United Group, Manildra, Auburn Council, various RailCorp divisions and regions, and adjacent property owners.
The buildings were designed to accommodate the maintenance, repairs and other relevant through life service phase activities in respect of up to 1,000 train sets including existing RailCorp Sets. The design and layout of the site works and the buildings maximised the opportunities for utilisation of the maintenance facility for the provision of through life support services for both the new and existing sets.
The site works covered an area of 10ha and included the design of some 10 km of site track work adjacent to the main western rail line. Throughout the construction period, the adjacent United Group Maintrain facility was able to remain fully operational. Full infrastructure services for both the rail network and the maintenance facility were established including environmental safeguards. Signalling design was completed for not only the site track work but also the connections to the RailCorp network.
All necessary approvals were achieved early in the design process thanks to the project team's strict adherence to the stringent applicable RailCorp procedures.
