Sydney’s desalination plant is the largest desalination plant operating in Australia, and second largest of its kind in the world.  The plant has the capacity to produce 250 million litres of drinking water each day which is 15% of Sydney’s water supply.  The project consists of the offshore installation of the four intakes and two outlet rises (located approx 250 metres off shore in the Tasman Sea) connected to a  2.5 kilometres long intake and outlet tunnels to supply seawater to the main plant site of 43 hectares at Kurnell.
The main plant consists of thirty four structures including pre-treatment, seawater Reverse Osmosis, post-treatment & potabilisation facilities.
The project was operational and supplied water to the people of Sydney on the 28th January 2010, just 26 months after the construction began.
