This project consists of a new 3.5-storey building for Rockdale Council on two council properties - 444 and 446 Princes Highway, Rockdale. The new Central Library building was integrated into the adjacent heritage-listed town hall building to the south and connected to the council administration building to the east across King Lane. The new library has glazed facades to the Princes Highway and King Lane to utilise and promote natural light. A glazed atrium spans the space between the existing town hall and the new library, connecting the two buildings and accentuating the heritage brick wall of the town hall.  The logistical constraints of this site created a complex set of challenges including:-  * The adjacent existing council buildings - the council chambers, library and council administration building - were all fully occupied and operational.  * Clearway restrictions along the Princes Highway.  * Water-charged and contaminated ground conditions were encountered   during construction, resulting in redesigning the basement to ensure it remained above the water table, thus eliminating costly shoring, dewatering during construction as well as the long-term operation.  * Because of the poor bearing capacity of the existing natural ground material, the building is founded on a series of piles into underlying sandstone 15m below the original ground level.  * A key internal design feature of the building is the grand voids that span three storeys. While they are impressive from a design aspect, these voids provided difficulties to the construction process from an access and safety aspect.     The project team resolved these challenges and have achieved a new state-of-the-art library that blends into the the existing town hall building with exceptional aesthetic internal and external finishes and facades, combined with the latest engineering materials and structure. The new Rockdale Library is testimony to the skill and experience of the whole design and construction team.
