The Joynton Avenue Creative Centre and Matron Ruby Grant Park was an intricate and adaptive reuse of the nurses’ quarters and operating theatre at the former Royal South Sydney Hospital, which now includes artistic workshops, gallery spaces, community hire space, public amenities and creative offices. The project was a lump-sum contract of 112 weeks’ duration. Because of the project being split into separate areas, with each area being designed and documented by different consultants, the building contractor had to take instructions from three architects, two landscape architects, one heritage architect, three structural engineers and three hydraulic, electrical and mechanical engineers.  The feature of this project was the timber-shaped shells of the JACC building. The builder brought together a team of seven experienced carpenters and apprentices to develop, design and construct the shells. The interior of each shell is lined with blackbutt timber battens, individually packed to create the curved shape.  The building restoration works involved all traditional building trades, with particular emphasis on exposed detailed timber works, face brickwork restoration and exposed surface-mounted services. These were difficult in many instances, requiring sensitive and imaginative techniques in matching the new with existing finishes.  All the restoration of the existing and refurbishment works and the additions have been carried out to the highest quality and workmanship.   The completed project could not have been achieved to such a high standard without a truly collaborative approach by the builder, with the client, consultants, subcontractor and suppliers all working together to achieve a common goal.
