Lahey Constructions was contracted to construct the new two-storey police station in Moree, NSW. The post-tensioned structure contains three holding docks, eight cells, conference facilities, fitness centre and exercise yard, plus cellular and modern office space for the key departments.
The existing police building was retained while the new police facility was being constructed. Only 150mm separated these two buildings throughout the construction period. It was critical for the existing police station building to remain operational throughout construction.
During the early works the site flooded on numerous occasions due to its closeness to the Mehi River in Moree. Lahey implemented a strategy to mitigate the effects of the inclement weather by placing a 50mm concrete blinding immediately after the basement excavation was completed.
Under the GC21 Contract, Lahey proposed an alternate piling system for the basement walls. This halved the number of piles required, which saved time and reduced costs for the client.
Following completion of the new police station, the builder demolished the existing two-storey police station and landscaped the site.
The building, including all fit-out, was finished to an excellent standard and is deserving of an Excellence in Construction Award.
