International Towers Sydney were constructed over a period of five years. Similar construction methodology was employed across all three towers to deliver more than 250,000 square metres of commercial, retail and public space. Each tower comprised of three levels of podium, three plantroom floors and 44, 35 and 33 levels of commercial tenant space. The unique and complex nature of International Towers Sydney presented several construction difficulties which were overcome by the Lendlease project team. The first and the most difficult was the overall scale of the project and the concurrent delivery of all three commercial Towers within the CBD. The project was bordered by business and residential dwellings on three sides and Sydney Harbour on the fourth. Materials handling, public and workforce logistics formed key challenges that had to be overcome to ensure the successful delivery of the Towers. Simultaneous construction produced labour stress within the construction industry. Subcontractors rapidly expanding their workforce to keep up with labour demands, resulting in many new workers to the industry. This was combated by establishing a permanent training facility, Barangaroo Skills Exchange, in partnership with Tafe NSW to allow onsite training. The District cooling plant and harbour heat rejection system is a single system located in the basement of the towers to provide cooling water to the precinct. Utilising the harbour water reduces the buildings need for fresh water. The Blackwater treatment plant recycles all sewerage from the Commercial Towers and also the existing Millers Point community. Generating recycled water for toilets throughout the towers and irrigating throughout the precinct and headland park saving one mega litre of potable water per day. Yet another iconic waterfront precinct demonstrating the skill and experience of the whole project design and construct team.
