The Crown Sydney Hotel Resort project is a new 275m tall (72 storey) waterfront development currently under construction in the Barangaroo South precinct, Sydney. Lendlease Building Pty Ltd is managing the construction of the project, on behalf of Crown Resorts. The twisting sculptural form of the building design has resulted in a fully glazed building envelope which comprises up to 7,000 irregular modular panels, 90% of which are uniquely shaped to follow the organic form of the tower. The geometry of the building presented challenges for the safe installation of the façade, particularly with regard to minimising the risk of a person falling from height (considered High Risk Construction Work). The project team had to address these challenges, including the safety aspects associated with the delivery and loading of materials, access for personnel, and co-ordination of other work groups on the project. The solution came in the form of a custom designed, self-dependent, access platform and screen system. The access platform is built progressively, section by section, to provide both safe access and a permanent structure that supports the facade. All sections have edge protection handrails pre-installed, prior to launch. The façade support system was engineered to take the additional loading to be an integrated access platform, thus not requiring any additional ties / rework, and in turn removing unnecessary re-work. As the gap between the shear wall and façade support system progressively narrows, an exterior screen system is installed to provide access. The screen is accessed using a custom made ‘drawbridge’ deck integrated with the external screen system. This combination of unique access systems allows bracket and panel installation in front of the void area at the start of each level. Prior to mobilising to site, a full-size prototype was constructed off site in a factory in North West Sydney, which allowed inspections, testing, and fine tuning of the system ahead of the installation, resulting in safe installation of the façade through sound safety design planning and consultation principals.
