This new facility is a world class bespoke surfing facility within the Sydney Olympic Park precinct. The project incorporates a 16000m2 surf lagoon holding 20 million litres of water. The lagoon can create both left and right-hand surf waves, surfable by beginners as well as pro level surfers. The lagoon is designed to accommodate 84 surfers per hour and deliver a wave every 8 seconds. Overlooking the lagoon is a three level multi-story facility. The building houses the Surf Academy, fitness & Wellness centre, commercial offices, licensed bars – café and a restaurant, rental hire and store area plus a heated splash pool. The lagoon base floor levels were critical to ensure the desired wave shapes are achieved. This required extensive survey work for each concrete pour. A bespoke concrete design was required to overcome shrinkage issues, which required review of placement methods and specialized curing using thermal blankets.   The structure supporting the lagoon was supported on uncontrolled fill requiring unique foundation design solutions.   The Wave Garden Cove Equipment was sourced from outside Australia and required close collaboration of multiple parties to ensure seamless installation on site. After the discovery of contaminated material, the project was completed to a tight programme with the result being a unique facility for the Sydney surfers.
