The Parramatta Aquatic & Leisure Centre is a state-of-the-art facility built for the residence of Parramatta. This new aquatic centre covers 40,000 sq meters in Parramatta Park. The site itself has a heritage listed sight line from Mays Hill across to Old Government House. The design necessitated the building to be cut into the hillside so as not to obstruct the sight line. The centre includes a 50m 10 lane outdoor heated pool with seating, a 25-meter 8 lane indoor learn to swim/programme pool, indoor splash play area, multipurpose community rooms, spa & sauna facilities, fitness centre, café and car park with 186 spaces. The requirements necessitated the inclusion of 80,000 plants with more than 500 trees indigenous to the area. The roof that spans the indoor pools is a ‘green roof’ buried within the park area and has been fully planted out -returning publicly accessible space back to parkland. This area now has extensive footpaths, turfed areas and reflective spaces. 10,000m3 of topsoil from the old golf course was stockpiled for the duration project and then reused in the final landscaped areas. With such a large site and building footprint, along with the restrictions imposed on us by Sydney Trains in relation to 33KVa overhead powerlines and associated easements tower cranes and conventional loading zones were not an effective or safe solutions. The methodology adopted utilized the Myrtha Pools prefabricated system that enabled the 50m pool construction to be delayed. The materials handling strategy along with a pile shotcrete retaining wall allowed a haul road around the perimeter of the structure whilst leaving one section out to enable mobile cranes, concrete pumps etc to enter the inner circle. With the quantity of precast wall panels and such a complex roof structure and detailed acoustic ceilings the programme benefits from the Myrtha Pool system allowed the pools to be taken off the critical path allowing a focus on the pool surrounds and specialist finishes. Lipman has achieved a quality project because of their ability to be flexible during the design and construction phases to respond to site conditions that were evolving throughout the project.
