Lipman were engaged for the design and construction of the Nepean Hospital East Block Pathology Fitout and Façade Replacement project. The internal scope consisted of the construction of a new 3500m2 Pathology Laboratory in an unused under croft beneath an existing live clinical building in this very busy campus. The new Pathology Laboratory for Sydney Health includes: Physical Containment Level 2 & 3(PC2 & PC3) Laboratories, Reception / Specimen Collection Room, Staff Support & Admin Spaces, Shared Support Spaces,  Pre-Analytical, Micro-biology, Transfusion, Haematology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Anatomical Pathology, Cyto-pathology, the extension of the existing plantroom, the addition of new rooftop plant platforms, new external mechanical riser, associated cool, warm and freezer rooms, and associated site works, including landscaping and carparking. The facade scope included new aluminium cladding to replace the existing Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) to approximately 50% of the East Block building, all within the live hospital environment. This scope increased to 100% recladding very early on in the project presenting Lipman many challenges requiring quick resolution.  The construction of a technically complex sophisticated pathology lab underneath the operational hospital required Lipman to develop various strategies to manage the build. A new riser from the under croft to above roof level to reticulate 20 different services was required due to the fume cupboard exhausts which Lipman prefabricated. Fire rating of the new riser was carried out before it was lifted into position. The roof top mech plant platforms were redesigned to consolidation the refrigeration at ground level with one roof mounted platform that houses the mechanical exhaust fans. Lipman’s also worked with the pathology user groups to develop cutting edge back draft Anatomical Pathology Cut up Stations fabricated in bespoke stainless steel. The Pathology lab is beautifully designed and constructed with the junction and fit of finishes, fitted furniture and services crisply delivered. Together with the newly re-clad exterior, the building is easily mistaken for an entirely new building addition to the Nepean campus.
