The Woodlawn Mechanical Biological Treatment Facility is situated at Tarago, some 40 minutes south-west of Goulburn. It converts 144,000t per annum of waste to produce compost. The site converted 8 hectares of virgin land and consists of four major processing buildings housing associated plant and equipment, 3ha storage pad, administration building, large scale services reticulation and upgrades including new access roads. The early phase of the works was to achieve a 90,000m3 cut and fill. This being completed in 3 months allowed the structure to commence involving 9,000m3 of concrete from a batching plant established on site to ensure quantity and quality of supply. Concrete mixes exceeding 120Mpa were utilised to withstand the interaction with the leachate (highly acidic liquid). The temperature encountered during construction was -9 to 40 degrees and is classified as sub-alpine. There was 1200t of structural steel fabricated and erected. Lipman’s added value with the value engineering undertaken during the design process. The client, Veolia, was able to commence wet commissioning well ahead of their plant opening schedule. Lipman have constructed one of the largest facility in the world for Veolia and the largest of its type in Australia. This facility was due to the diligence and excellent design, planning and execution by Lipman.
