Lipman were contracted for the construction of the new Western Cancer Centre Dubbo Centre (WCCD) which included a ground floor and first floor of labs, specialised equipment storage, front of house and staff amenities, consultant and patient suites, and staff offices.
The project is a highly complex building with four Major Medical Equipment installations, each requiring a thorough and detailed construction methodology. The key installation was the construction of the Radiation Bunker for the Linear Accelerator. To control the risk of voids during the concrete placement - a critical risk for radiation leakage, Lipman and their engineers developed an alternative structural solution that utilized two permanent 250mm thick precast walls replacing the need for formwork, which significantly reduced the volume of concrete required.
The WCCD centre links seamlessly to the existing Hospital Street, which during construction required sensitive staging due to the interface with the adjacent existing live facility. The site appears to have been well managed and the project interior and exterior are crisp and completed to a high standard of finish.
Lipman managed many challenges; from the rural location, the difficulties caused by Covid 19, to the availability of construction workers and logistics of obtaining materials. Having embraced these challenges, they have delivered a high-quality facility for the regional communities of Western New South Wales and rightly deserve this award.
