Built for the Department of Education and Communities, Holroyd School is a special school that caters for 186 students aged between five and 18 years. Works included the removal of demountables, demolition of eight classrooms, extensive site works and 16 new specially designed classrooms and associated facilities. There are also extensive walkways and secure play areas. 30 classes of students remained on site during construction. Ongoing consultation and communication with the school community was essential to ensure the safety of the children with special needs. Site restrictions included overland flow and flood studies. Varying soil conditions across the site, required individual footing solutions. BCA and access consultants were needed to amend BCA and Access requirements to suit the children’s special needs.
A good example of co-operation between all parties to achieve a functional, high standard school campus.
