This project, the construction of a new 6 Star Green Star commercial office building on the corner of Elizabeth and Hunter Streets Sydney commenced in July 2011.
The project team have dealt with very tight restrictions of access to and from the site for the delivery of materials and equipment including constructing the tower crane with an off-centre base and additional tower supports to meet additional requirements imposed by the DA.
Each morning, the site supervisors conduct a daily prestart meeting with the aid of an electronic whiteboard which allows them to print an accurate record of each prestart which can then be communicated to any contractors not present at the morning meeting.
Prior to the commencement of work on the site, Mirvac’s project team undertook their 'DOOR' process (that is to 'Design Out Our Risk’), which identified a number of hazardous activities and risks associated with the works. Hold points were established, prior to each significant stage, to ensure that an all in consultation approach was taken with contractors, consulting on the planned process for each stage of the works.
The project team also engaged with the designers and contractors on an ongoing basis to design out risks, as far as they were reasonably able.
One such example involved the simple application of fishing line tied to each and every nut and bolt for the structural steel erection directly above Elizabeth and Phillip Streets.
The project team’s commitment to providing a safe workplace was clearly evident to the judges, from the impressive lead and lag indicators, to the ongoing consultative environment, and the close interaction with the contractors and the designers on the project to develop practical controls to ensure that each worker goes home safely at the end of their shift.
